Make Every Day Earth Day

Instead of celebrating Earth Day once a year, let’s try to make it a daily event.
Here are some ideas that anyone can use to make this a greener planet:
• Think of ways you can reduce your carbon footprint-both as an individual and also at work. Strive to cut your energy consumption by 10% each year. Baby steps lead to long reaching permanent changes.
• Support organizations and businesses that are going green, as they have made a conscious decision to help better the planet and would appreciate your patronage.
• Vote with your pocket book as well as at the ballot box. Avoid companies that are still using wasteful packaging or are not going green.
• Support green candidates and politicians. Ask questions. Learn the issues. Get involved.
• Promote activism, but don’t become a caricature. You cannot protest every change toward modernism or you will turn off moderates, hurt your cause and actually rally against some beneficial programs. For example–Big corporations are not always bad –ala Apple, Wal Mart, Whole Foods and others.
• Find out if nuclear power is a viable green alternative. Many green-minded individuals are leaning toward nuclear as the best of all evils. How are we going to power the world over the next 50-75 years, while solar and wind power takes decades to get more widely circulated? We need short term, as well as long term solutions to our energy needs. Become an informed citizen.
• Spread the green gospel. Use social media and one-on-one conversations to explain the importance of going green.
• Don’t just preach to the choir. Nearly half the population still does not believe in global warming. It may take a generation to change that mind set, but any cause takes a while to spread.
• Listen to both sides of the green debate. Learn what is holding people back from joining the green movement. Is it financial? Is it political? Is it apathy? Ask questions, don’t just shout out slogans. With such a large number of people not yet participating in the green movement, we need to know what can be done to get others to change to a greener way of life. We cannot aim to win a discussion on the topic, we need more green converts.
• Make Earth Day a part of every day.
